Rara Avis presents workshops which aim to give participants practical ideas about expanding single-line melodies into arrangements for small and large ensembles. The duo will work through the process of "building it up": adding counter melodies, drones, percussion and ornamentation while also exploring ideas about creating form and structure.
Players will have the opportunity to sample making and playing arrangements from various periods and styles during the course of the workshop. Medieval dances, folk songs, African rhythms and jazz tunes make up some of the possibilities, and participants are encouraged to bring and send their own material as well as bring all their melodic and percussive instruments.
Rara Avis offers evening, one-day and weekend workshops. The exact format depends on the number of participants, which can range from six to twenty. Music will be provided on the day of the workshop.
